Chronicle of a Telephone Chappie

This chronicle details the life of a typical working-class family during and immediately after the last world war, as seen by a wartime kid. It provides an appreciation of the UK's analogue telephone system and an apprenticeship with the post office engineering department, with a nostalgic glimpse of socialising in the 1950s and a fascinating account of the downs and ups of national service. The story continues during the 1960s and following decades when the author embarked on epic adventures to Nigeria, Tanzania, Czech Republic and World Travel.

The narrative is set against the back cloth of politics, world events and phenomenal technical innovations which made the analogue telephone system redundant and paved the way to the privatisation of British Telecommunications and the dawning of the digital age which enabled information transparency across the globe, mainly thanks to thousands of ‘telephone chappies’.
