It was the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway that created Cleethorpes as a seaside resort in Victorian times. It acquired the entire seafront land; beautifying the Central Promenade for quiet leisure and contemplation, whilst developing the North Promenade for the fun, thrills and excitement of the thousands of visitors it brought to the resort by excursion trains during the summer season.
This new work is the story of the development of the Cleethorpes North Promenade and that of Wonderland, the largest covered amusement park on the east coast with shelter for 20,000 people (Pleasure the Weather Can’t Spoil!) being told largely through the eyes of those who were there, Wonderland people!
Cleethorpes has enjoyed no less than four thrilling roller coaster rides, but like other British seaside resorts, competition from car ownership and overseas package holidays has brought with it a roller coaster of fortunes.
Thoroughly researched and illustrated, Miles of Smiles is easy and essential reading for residents and visitors alike, transport enthusiasts and those passionate about the bright lights of the fairground. Miles of Smiles is a journey through time of a traditional British seaside resort, so hold tight and enjoy the ride!
